    An excellent write up. Very thorough. A lot of time spent on the written word. (A declining skill) Based on the results shown in the pictures I agree it's a slightly usable toy. And very few used screws are actually usable anyway. If they are marked I'll just pay the few cents it takes to buy a new screw. I value my time building too much to intentionally use ugly parts. I make enough mistakes as it is, without intentionally adding flaws. Screws are cheap. Many times I can buy them for $3-4 per pound. The biggest drawback to the project in my life would be the time spent building the machine vs. sorting by hand.

    Nothing against this man's build. The instructable is well designed.Traditionally a sled of this sort is called a panel sled and used to cut large panels. Cuts that would be unhandy using the fence. It's not a miter fence. Table saws have a miter gauge, which is adjustable for angles. It's for making angles, hence miter.I think most will find the sled unhandy for cutoffs. Mostly since the fence can't be used with the sled on the saw. The sled also has no advantage over a zero clearance insert for clean cuts, and the insert is easier to make. It's also going to reduce the maximum depth of cut by the amount of the thickness of the sled.     Good instructable, but a warning.In the US, few RV or mobile home parks are going to let a homemade RV park in their park. Most use the excuse that it may not be built according to standards. Yours is going to have additional problems. It's not going to fit in with the rest of the RV's. Odd shape along with pork and corrugated siding will get you excluded from a resort park for sure. Some parks in out of the way areas or very rural red neck areas will, however, take your money and let you in.

    Good instructable and good construction for traditional US saw. But for small saws such as this the Japanese know best. A pull saw, a saw that cuts on the pull doesn't require the back blade. If you had reversed the blade when making the cut for the new blade it would cut on the pull. And it would then cut very thick material. And also cut flush. If you haven't used a pull saw you should try it. They just work better. How did you sharpen the saw. It had to be less than sharpe.

    Very good post on using leather. Not so good for making a bicycle seat. For riding any distance those seams, rivets and washers would be guaranteed to cause blisters on my rear end. :)

Water purification is very important as you say, but this article is about cleaning the water of visible particles. Visible particles are not much of a problem. It's the pathogens in the water that are the problem. Except for using bleach to "purify" what you call the last 5% nothing in the article is going to have much if any effect on life or mitigating sickness. And bleach doesn't remove heavy metals. You made the statement that your setup purified the water just fine without carbon. How do you know? Clear water doesn't mean pure water. Regardless of the energy used dirty water that has been boiled is much safer to drink than water that has been cleaned by filtering.When using bleach the concentration of sodium hypochlorite is important. Do not use scented or color safe bleach. And a lot of bleach has additional cleaning agents added to it. Don't use that sort of bleach either.This statement is just made up nonsence.* Tip* If you can still smell bleach after forty minutes, wait a little bit longer, it is probably still killing bacteria.     When I see builds like these I wonder how things get priced in various parts of the world. This type of clamps is quite cheap in the US. Bought from Harbor Freight they are $2 to $5 each, which is less than what it would cost for the metal and welding supplies in the US. Then I think, wait, they are made in China! Why do they cost less here than in other countries in that same part of the world! Or do the metal and welding supplies cost much less in other countries. Never the less a good instructable.

    Well that is the wisdom that is repeated often. I think it's urban myth. Ball bearings won't last as long as sleeve bearings, but ordinary sleeve bearings have significant drag. (excepting the sleeve bearings in engines) Ball bearings are used daily where side loads are the prevalent loads. Those ball bearings in the drill presses are not going to fail because they are ball bearings. They might fail due to being very cheaply made. Let's see, wheel bearings, including cars, table saws, circular saws, Dremel tools, lawnmowers, trailers, routers, all have ball bearings and significant side loads. And that includes some quite cheaply made tools.

    What do you use for the printable media? Plastic is hard and durable enough????? I know everyone is enamored with 3-D printing, but this looks like a job a CNC router would perform better. One could use hard wood or metal for the blank.

    PLA might be able to withstand 11,000 psi, but it would have to be solid to do so. The ridges on the embossing blocks you are making won't withstand anything like that. If I step on a lego in the dark it's likely I don't have shoes on and the reason the lego doesn't break is my foot gives first! Even with shoes I can't put but maybe 100 psi on it. Not unless I pick my foot up and stomp on it with rengence! Not nearly the same thing. I can certainly step on plastic project boxes that have been 3d printed and break them. Professional leather workers use a small metal tool or a single letter at a time. I don't think your embossing with the plastic plates and vice are going to last. And I don't think you have the experience with the technique to say it'll last a long long time. L...

    Soldering and brazing are not the same thing. So you started off incorrectly. Too bad you capitalized correctly, because you got it wrong.Soldering requires less heat in that the solder is melted and flows into the joint. Brazing requires much more heat in that the material being joined is heated to its melting point and allowed to coalesce to help form the joint. And a rod is also melted to add to the joint.

    Excellent instructions. For builders of wind chimes. At times I've lived for several months in an RV especially in the wintertime in the south. Wind Chimes used to be popular to hang on the RV awning. The problems was they almost universally annoy the neighbors, and not just a little bit. Apparently the particular frequencies are hard to shut out. So unless you live where others can't hear the chimes, you might not want to hang one up. I'm talking about knocking on doors, confronting the offenders and complaining to the park managers kind of annoyed. I agree with the neighbors, it's just additional noise they didn't ask for. Sort of like trespassing.

    Good instructable.But I've always wondered what is the reason for eating gluten free. Gluten causes no health problems, unless a person is one of the very very few that are gluten intolerant. Ditto dairy products. Neither by themselves cause weight gain. Sometimes people on a gluten or dairy free diet do lose weight simply because they become more aware of what they are eating. Sounds to me like an excuse for people to shift the blame for being overweight to something they have no control over, rather than the fact they eat too much. Like saying "I'm fat, but it's not my fault". People have been eating bread for hundreds or thousands of years, but being fat is a 20th and 21st century problem.

    If I traveled and stayed somewhere I expected someone to break into my room while I was in the room I believe I would have a far better method to keep them out. Anyone over 120 pounds could break that in about 5 seconds, then be in the room with me. That's when I would get worried.

    Just being ornery I guess, but that isn't a pergola. A pergola is an canopy with trelliswork with the express purpose of growing trailing vines or flowers.

    I may have missed your source for the acrylic sheet. Even though you are in Scotland I'm curious since here in the US, 4 mm (.22 in.) acrylic sheet is going to cost about $6-$8 a square foot. Or $70-$80 a square meter. Which would make the cost of the acrylic about $500. And unless one is lucky it would have to be shipped which would likely add $100 to the cost. I checked and many home supply big box stores don't sell panels that size.

    I know the right way to use periods and commas. And I don't confuse them, using one when I should have been using another. "... the word equivalent exist(s) for a reason...", but the problem is you just made up a reason. Means nothing to anyone but you. Like I said and many others have also said, use standard terms, don't make stuff up, be consistent and use ISO standards. You keep using junk you'll continue to get criticism and obviously you don't much like that. Technical articles are not prose, correctness is absolutely critical. By the way your construction techniques and expertise are really very good. Better than 99 out of a 100 hobbyist.

    Hmmm...every tablet, smartphone, hobby electric drones use soft shell lithium batteries. They seem pretty reliable to me.

    While you have done a good job illustrating your project when writing a scholarly article you should stick to industry standards not consumer made up flash. Also 585Wh/22.2 volts is 26.364 amps, mAh. Perhaps you meant to use a comma instead of a period. I know some countries use a period to mark the thousands, but you used commas elsewhere. Converting the capacity to 3.7V mAh equivalent is not industry standard, just a way to hype capacity. It's a 585 Wh battery and will provide different amounts of current for different voltages. But the same amount of power. While you are just copying the conversion it was conceived as a method to inflate and hide the true capacity of lithium batteries. Only used to hide the true capacity.

    I don't think it is clear that this is not a power supply build. It is a battery protection circuit. Lithium batteries do not like to be discharged below a certain voltage, this circuit is to turn off the voltage to the soldering iron when the battery voltage reaches approx. 15 volts. Should be able to use it with any 20-volt lithium battery with just a modification to the contacts to the battery.

    I'm not sure what was the purpose of that outburst. Critical mass simply means there is enough hydrogen to burn (oxidize) and enough oxygen to support the process. Put a lot of hydrogen in the presence of a lot of oxygen and it will produce a lot of energy and water as a by-product. As in a hydrogen burning automobile engine...or the Hindenburg. Except in the case of the Hindenburg I suspect most of the water was vaporized.

    You can't actually change the amount of current the heating pads draw, but to lower the current you might think about using a PWM voltage controller. It'll use less power and thus lower current since it pulses the voltage on and off. And of course, this will allow control of how warm the pads get. I suspect that's how the commercial jackets work.

    Very good instructable. I have some pads very close to the size of those used and when the voltage is 5 volts, they draw about 1400 ma. I checked. If used with 3.7 volt lion or lipo batteries the current will be at least twice that. This is likely why there are not many of these available commercially since one pad will run down one battery is less than an hour.

    Just a suggestion for future builds. Lay a ring of the four by fours on the floor. The lay a complete layer across that. Crisscross them to the correct height. Use long lag bolts to hold everything together. No need for the steel bands that way. Even with the bands that end grain on your build will eventually split.

    I've been soldering wires together for 40 years. Vibrations are not going to break a well-soldered joint, but do use the heat shrink for insulation. If the joints need to be strengthed twist the wires around each other or bend hooks in each end then close with pliers. Messier joint, but strong.

    Although there is little doubt that a bluetooth speaker of equal or better techniques could be bought much cheaper than this design, this is a good essay. The physical build techniques are well thought out and presented. The bluetooth connection can be used for other more esoteric projects. Kudo's for giving sources and links. Thumbs up!

It is possible to have a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen, HHO as you have written it and seem to believe, a gas on its own simply does not exist. The formula for a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen would be written as H2+O2. It is not a compound and has no properties on its own different than simply hydrogen and oxygen.     Actually yes I did and I also know a little chemistry. HHO is the formula for water written incorrectly it should be written H2O. A mixture of anything has no single formula. It is possible to have a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen, HHO as you have written it and seem to believe, a gas on its own simply does not exist. The formula for a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen would be written as H2+O2. It is not a compound and has no properties on its own different than simply hydrogen and oxygen. These new compounds must follow ordinary chemistry. And when H2 and O2 combine they form water, sometimes heavy water, H3O, not some made up a compound. Brown's gas or HHO gas simply does not exist. It was made up by a person named Brown who was tried and convicted of fraud in the matter. You might want to check into the meaning of mixture and compound. Sand and water is a mixture. The sand is still there in the form of sand and the water is still there in the form of water. SiO2 is sand and H2O is water. Sometimes sand itself is a mixture of different compounds.

    That's the point. There is no such thing as a mixture HHO. There is a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen. And since both exist as binary molecules it would be H2 + O2, not HHO. It could be two parts hydrogen and 1 part oxygen, but that would just be by weight or volume or however you want to measure. When you write HHO you are actually saying a molecule of water. (A compound). So you say mixture and write compound. The only compound of HHO that exists is water, not some make believe gas fuel. It's a hoax.

  • Waterproof Dryer Lint Fire-Starter

    Most all clothes are treated with fire retardant so cotton balls are going to work better with less treatment.

    Cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly work better and are much easier. I've tried both and dryer lint sometimes just doesn't burn well. Most clothes at least in the US are treated with fire retardant. Probably elsewhere as well since US clothes are seldom made in the US. I suspect this idea works because of the ingredients and treatment other than the lint.

    It wouldn't be much of a stretch to make a lathe replacement with a larger motor and then this would be a nice tool. For someone who likes to build things. For the time put in making it a part time job would probably allow a commercial unit to be bought sooner!!!

    What sort of lathe, brand, size and hp of motor are you using? Most hobby lathes don't have a lot of power.

    Very well written and great idea.But before someone builds one they might think about the capabilities somewhat. It will do touch up sanding or finish sanding, but it will not thickness sand, simply because no lathe has enough power. I doubt if it will clean up pallet wood for example.

Usually errors in this type of electronics are cumulative. So if the machine is 1 meter wide and the field is 100 by 100 meters, there could be a cumulative error of 100 x 5cm or 500 cm without run time correction. Also if the field is not prepared and very level and flat, the cultivation dept will vary. A truly autonomous tractor is many times harder to build than an autonomous car. The big 500 hp. tractors than pull 40-50 foot discs are not completely autonomous. They have an operator in the cab that makes small corrections. All the errors in a car can be corrected by optics and radar. Another thing to consider is that the GPS systems are either Russian or USA, and in both cases are subject to military priority. Any other country is using a GPS system they have no control over. Any system that is used in a small area would probably be easier to build and far more accurate using in field radar reflectors. There is actually no reason to use GPS for this device. A radar unit on the small tractor and several reflectors could be made with the accuracy of a fraction of the wavelength of the radar frequency. Very small error.

    With the compass you'll know which was is north, but without any history as you said, it is still lost. A compass can't tell where it is located. Without gps or a map (or history) the location is not known no matter how far one moves. The line the machine or you moves along could be anywhere. With a compass one has to know where one is to go where one wants.

    Hamblin, I can't see how a license would be needed. First in the US at least a person can build whatever they want, so long as they make no profit from it.Second this is NOT a new concept. There are large tractors used on corporate farms that do exactly the same thing with the same equipment. The only thing that might be licensed would be his code. And I doubt his code is completely original to him.

    "If you get lost in a thick jungle or underground car park you're stuffed!"With a compass or any sort you still have to know where you are in the jungle or garage in order to make use of said compass. Doesn't do much good to know where north is if you don't know which direction you need to travel!

    Hamblin, you might want to go smaller than 50 horsepower. A 50 horsepower tractor is a typical farm tractor. A small 15 hp lawnmower will spin its wheels pulling a small disc.

We are talking about a way to recycle batteries safely into a useful product. And if you want to know, from the number and success I've had with making 18650 battery packs I'm pretty much an expert.     Oh...I've used the procedure many times and know others who have also. No flaming batteries!

    I've made numerous battery packs from old laptop batteries. Some I've solder to several times. I use a little extra flux as well as scruff the end of the battery. Never had one fail. Heat can damage any battery, even lead acid, but it would take an obvious effort to get an 18650 hot enough to fail by soldering to it. I can pick the battery up with my hands immediately after I solder to it! I think the batteries sometimes fail and then they get hot. Not the other way around with a soldering iron.

    If you actually damaged 1% of your batteries by soldering you need to consider changing your soldering technique.

Thinking about it the whole premise for the development of the foldable scope is a little week. I would think that few underdeveloped world areas could not afford one of the cheap kids units. I suspect they would only be a few dollars in those areas. If a small village couldn't buy a 5 dollar ms, they probably also don't have any medical staff or person to interpret.It is a good instructable Just not a wide spread use for it.e,

    The end of the whip should probably not be feathered or frayed. The pop or snap is simply the tip exceeding the speed of sound and that frayed end will slow the tip down. Try a short piece of leather.

  • Unusual Uses for Broken & Dull Drill Bits

    Skin cells are no big deal, what a person needs to watch out for are those brain cells that are dying off!!!

    90 percent of small drill bits are broken because of poor technique. Primarily not drilling straight. With small bits do not hold the handle of the drill. Use one hand to hold close to the chuck and the other to push down straight in line with the drill bit. It's very easy to bend and then snap the bit if holding the handle. Drills are very poorly designed, with the handle offset like they are. In metal a major reason for broken bits is a stuck bit. Try using lubricant and a proper speed. On bits below 1/8 in, get a chuck for and use a dremel type tool.

    It would be a lot safer to use either discarded copper pipe or even buy a few feet of copper pipe. Or buy copper el fittings. They are cheap. Less that 50 cents in my area. 10 feet of 1/2" copper pipe is about $20. And no zinc oxide fumes. Don't use copper fittings that have been used as they probably were soldered together with lead solder. And the fumes from melting lead are worse than the zinc oxide.

    I had an out of work friend try that with quarters, half dollars and big dollar coins. Yes, infinite money, but only about 25 cents an hour profit. It takes a while to sort through $1000 dollars of coins to get maybe $1 worth of silver. Much less profit with pennies.
